The challenge
The brand sold into Brazil. Category pages and buying guides were the URLs that needed to rank. The previous vendor had filled the profile with coupon blogs, deal aggregators, and thin round-ups that happened to mention the brand. Rank tracking from a vanity view looked flattering. Rank tracking against the queries shoppers type did not.
A parallel problem sat in the content programme. Some drafts had started life as Spanish Latin American guides and been run through translation for .br. Brazilian editors treated those pieces as imports. The few links that did go live sat on thin blogs, not on the consumer and retail publishers that actually send shoppers.
Paid social was carrying demand. Organic Brazilian category queries were not. Competitors with Portuguese-language publisher citations occupied the page-one positions merchandising wanted. The brief was not more links in Latin America. It was Brazilian Portuguese, on Brazilian publishers, next to products a Brazilian shopper would recognise.
The approach
The brief named three category hubs and one seasonal buying-guide asset as the only destinations. Homepage-only pitches and unfinished templates were paused. Coupon and deal networks were declined on sight, regardless of DR.
Criteria included niche fit, Ahrefs DR, Moz DA, Majestic TF, and a traffic floor. A sample list of Brazilian consumer titles, retail trade press, and how-to publishers landed usually within 24 hours, each row with metrics and pricing. The client approved a pool of about twice the monthly target so seasonal desks could say no without stalling delivery.
Native Brazilian Portuguese copywriters wrote every article past 1,500 words unless a shorter length was requested. Product names, sizes, payment methods (including Pix), and shipping examples were Brazilian. We did not recycle a Spanish guide and change the currency symbol. Every prospect was hand-vetted against PBNs and thin sites before outreach. Live URLs went into a shared Google Sheet against the category page they were meant to support.
Results
Across 5 months, combined organic sessions on the target category hubs rose 71 percent. Non-brand Brazilian clicks in Search Console followed the same direction. Coupon-classified residue stopped growing.
Editorial referring domains on the approved consumer and retail pool reached 41. Referral sessions from those hosts were recorded in the sheet and converted above site average during peak planning windows for the categories in play.
The catalogue still has to convert. Publisher citations do not replace merchandising. What changed is that Brazilian searchers started to meet the brand on pages written in the language they shop in, on domains they already trust for that job.
What we declined
- Coupon blogs, deal aggregators, and thin product round-ups.
- Spanish Latin American buying guides recycled into Brazilian Portuguese.
- PBNs and thin sites that failed the hand-vet on archive and outbound neighbourhood.
- Homepage-only placements that ignored the category URLs that convert.
Closing notes
Merchandising still owns the calendar. Outreach keeps adding Brazilian prospects so the pool can move when a category goes on promotion or a seasonal guide ships.
The shared Google Sheet remains the source of truth: URL, anchor, metrics snapshot, and publish date, without waiting for a month-end PDF. If a placement lands next to weak outbound neighbours after publication, it is flagged and not counted toward the month.
